Ms. Wesley on "October"

Dear Malley Families,

I can’t believe we have been in school for over a month. It has gone by so quickly. During the month of September Malley Drive had its first Community Learning Fair and it was an incredible success. A good time was had by all. We had approximately 150 of our families attend this event. We estimated that over 500 people were in our building during this time. Many community members and organizations helped us out with very generous donations. I want to thank the Colorado Rockies, Cici’s Italian restaurant, Chipotle, Quedoba, and Dairy Queen for their donations of food, gift cards, and souvenir memorabilia. Finally, I would like to thank Junior Troop 1197 of the Mountaineer Service Unit in Broomfield for their donation of over 2,000 books. We are very grateful to them for not only donating the books but also helping to distribute the books to our families. Thank you again to all who attended and helped to make this community event so successful.

Our teachers have been working hard every day with your children. On September 19th our teachers spent the day setting the goals for reading, writing and math for our school accountability workbook and we spent time working on the strategies that we will use to achieve those goals. In order to meet our goals this year, we will be focusing on oral language development throughout the day. Oral language development is essential in activating students’ background knowledge, it helps students articulate their thoughts and ideas, and it gives students an opportunity to experiment with new vocabulary. The saying goes, “If you can say it, you can read and write it.” This focus will help our students in all areas of the curriculum throughout the day. Our teachers will be attending trainings which will provide strategies that they can use throughout the day to assist our students in the development of oral language. If anyone would like to see our accountability workbook which outlines the specifics of our goals that strategies we will use to achieve these goals, please stop by the office.

October will be a busy month at Malley Drive. We have our fall Parent Teacher conferences on Wednesday, October 8th from 3:00-7:00 pm and on Thursday, October 9th from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm. Please make every effort to attend your student’s conference as it will be a time for the teacher to share with you your student’s progress as well as areas of needed growth. On Monday, October 13th is our PSO meeting. We will be having a representative from the district attend that meeting to share information with you and answer questions about the upcoming bond and mill levy on the November ballot. Finally, this month we will be holding our annual Fall Festival. This year it will be held on Friday, October 24th from 6:30-8:30. Information about this fun community event will be sent home with your child later this month.

Thank you to all the family members who have been working with the school and your child to help make their educational experience a success. When schools and home work together our students become the beneficiaries of a top notch education. I look forward to see everyone during our October school events.

Sincerely,

Anne Wesley
